The Fijian Government has made significant strides in enhancing energy access for remote island communities through the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund (FREF). This initiative, which carries a budget of $21.2 million FJD funded by a consortium of nations including New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, aims to provide clean and reliable solar power to over 20 villages throughout the country.
The project is being implemented in phases, with the first phase set to be completed by December 2025. Initial efforts focus on several key locations, such as Yacata Island, Yadrana Village in Lakeba, and Salia Village in Kioa, which will benefit directly from solar-powered electrification systems.
Following the successful rollout of Phase 1, the second phase will commence in January 2026 and is slated to target additional locations, including numerous villages across Gau Island, Koro Island, and various villages in Kadavu and Lau. This comprehensive approach to energy extension means that more Fijians living in remote areas will transition away from costly diesel-based systems to more sustainable and affordable solar alternatives.
Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, emphasized that this significant investment aligns with Fiji’s broader strategies for sustainable development and climate resilience. It not only enhances energy availability but also contributes positively to environmental conservation by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
In a related context, the ongoing implementation of projects under the Fiji Rural Electrification Grid Extension Program is expected to benefit approximately 1,636 households by the end of 2026. Previous investments into grid extension initiatives and solar home system installations further demonstrate the government’s commitment to renewable energy resources. With many projects completed and more underway, these efforts are pivotal in improving the quality of life for Fijians, particularly those in underserved communities.
