Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube has publicly called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka following the government’s failure to pass the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. Narube criticized the Prime Minister, stating that his administration has made numerous missteps since taking office in December 2022, but the failure of this critical bill stands out as particularly embarrassing.
Narube emphasized the responsibility that comes with leading the government and asserted that Rabuka should not attempt to shift the blame for this miscalculation. He indicated that the government should ensure it has the necessary support before bringing such significant motions to Parliament. Instead, Narube contended that this event reaffirms his belief that the only legitimate way to amend the contentious 2013 Constitution is through a legal challenge in court.
The recent events echo Narube’s previous statements regarding political trust and leadership integrity. He has previously pointed out the need for governments to focus on building credibility rather than merely swapping political parties or leaders, a sentiment he reiterated amidst discussions of factionalism within Rabuka’s administration. He has cautioned voters to be discerning in the upcoming 2026 elections, encouraging them to elect leaders who prioritize genuine political accountability, economic transformation, and unity among diverse communities.
As Fiji navigates these political challenges, there remains hope that continued public engagement and demands for accountable leadership can foster a more transparent and effective governance model.
