Fiji and New Zealand Unite in High-Stakes Drug Bust: What’s Next?

Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, has conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to New Zealand Police Commissioner Richard Chambers for their swift support during Operation White Wave. This collaboration saw the deployment of an explosive detector dog and its handler, which played a crucial role in the successful destruction of 4.15 tons of methamphetamine on February 24, 2025.

In his message, Commissioner Tudravu lauded the professionalism and expertise of the New Zealand Police team, whose assistance significantly bolstered the safe and secure handling of this operation. The effectiveness of the operation, complying with a court order, was enhanced by this international partnership, highlighting the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies across borders.

This successful operation builds on previous collaborative efforts in combating drug trafficking, showcasing a commitment to tackling growing challenges in the Pacific region. The Fiji Police Force has consistently worked alongside various agencies, including their own Detector Dog Unit, the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, and international partners like the Australian Federal Police and New Zealand Police, to dismantle illicit drug networks.

With over 400 seizures recorded by the Fiji Detector Dog Unit between July 2023 and January 2025, the efforts against drug trafficking have proven to be fruitful and impactful. The ongoing partnership with New Zealand Police emphasizes a unified strategy toward improving public health and safety in Fiji.

As both forces continue working together, their comprehensive approach instills hope for the future. The dedication to maintaining a safer environment for communities illustrates a positive trajectory in the fight against drug-related crimes in the Pacific region.
