Fiji Outrigger president Loretta Ooms has announced that the club is preparing for two significant international competitions: the Pacific Games in Palau this month and the World Distance Race in Brazil, scheduled for August. The excitement builds as three paddlers are set to represent Fiji in the World Distance Race, illustrating the country’s commitment to showcasing its talent on an international stage.
During the recent V6 Regatta Sprints held at Wailoaloa Beach in Nadi, Ooms expressed her satisfaction with the strong participation, which included clubs from both the Western and Central divisions of Fiji. She invited anyone interested in trying the Va’a paddling sport to get involved. This regatta not only provided an opportunity for competitive engagement but also laid the groundwork for the Pacific Games.
The enthusiasm witnessed in local events resonates with the commitment seen in other areas of Fiji’s sporting community, such as swimming and sailing, where young athletes are stepping up in preparation for upcoming international events. Emphasizing this commitment, Ooms noted the importance of fostering young talent and community support in developing a robust athletic culture in Fiji.
As Fiji looks ahead to these competitions, the optimism within both the paddling and broader sports communities is palpable, hinting at promising prospects for athletes aiming to elevate Fiji’s presence in international sports.
