Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed his country’s stance of neutrality amid escalating tensions between the United States and China. In a statement to regional leaders, he emphasized that the rivalry between these global powers should not manifest within the Pacific, asserting the need for unity and cooperation among island nations.

Rabuka highlighted that while China is emerging as a significant global force with increasing influence in the Pacific, this development should not disrupt Fiji’s traditional relationships with allies such as Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. He noted, “The Pacific leaders in all their recent discussions have tried to go for policies that are friendly to all and enemies to none. We need to hold hands,” underlining the region’s commitment to maintaining a balanced approach.

This perspective aligns with the views expressed by Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. He recently addressed the implications of U.S.-China relations during the 11th Beijing Xiangshan Forum, stressing that a constructive relationship between these two nations could offer peace and prosperity for smaller countries like Fiji. Conversely, he warned that rising tensions could undermine stability and increase the risk of conflict within the region.

Both leaders advocate for a “Zone of Peace” in the South Pacific, promoting principles of non-aggression, non-interference, and peaceful dispute resolution. This framework aims to foster dialogue and cooperation, providing an environment conducive to secure relationships among Pacific nations and their global partners.

Rabuka’s commitment to regional unity echoes through his acknowledgment that while the path of neutrality is challenging, it is essential for preserving peace and harmony in the Pacific. By remaining open to engaging with both China and traditional allies, Fiji seeks to strengthen its sovereignty and enhance its resilience in a changing geopolitical landscape.

In conclusion, as Fiji navigates these complex waters, its emphasis on collaboration and peace presents a hopeful outlook for stability in the Pacific and beyond. The ongoing dialogues among Pacific leaders could pave the way for a harmonious future despite global tensions.
