The Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) are launching separate investigations into the finalized report of the Commission of Inquiry, which involves multiple individuals of interest. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that he had received a formal referral letter for the investigations from President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, further indicating that any necessary prosecutions will be made.
In a meeting held with FICAC’s Acting Commissioner Lavi Rokoika, discussions focused on the specific areas requiring investigation to ensure the process is efficient and avoids duplication of efforts. Notably present in the briefing were Assistant Police Commissioner for Crime Mesake Waqa and the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) SSP Loraini Seru. Commissioner Tudravu assured the public of a thorough investigation to be conducted by a skilled team of senior investigators from the CID.
This initiative follows the earlier reports regarding potentially inappropriate appointment practices linked to former FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, which were detailed in findings from the Commission of Inquiry. The importance of these investigations lies in their potential to reinforce accountability and transparency within Fiji’s governance framework, addressing previous concerns about the integrity of public service appointments and fostering trust within the community.
The proactive stance taken by both FICAC and the Fiji Police Force is seen as a crucial step toward not only addressing past grievances but also promoting ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing ethical standards in public service. The community holds hope that as investigations unfold, they will lead to significant improvements in government accountability and further reinforce confidence in Fiji’s institutional integrity.
