Fiji continues to face challenges with permit delays and bureaucratic inefficiencies, hindering its developmental efforts and investment opportunities. During a post-budget symposium hosted by the Nadi Chamber of Commerce, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing efficiency, asserting that unnecessary delays will no longer be tolerated, as per a directive from the Prime Minister.

Prasad mentioned the fruitful engagement between the government and the private sector, expressing satisfaction with the participation level in recent budget consultations. “We are benefiting by being open, involving the private sector, and hearing from the community,” he noted, emphasizing that feedback has been invaluable in budget formulation.

To address these hurdles, the government is determined to cut through the red tape that complicates permit approvals, which not only frustrates investors but also slows down progress in local communities. In line with this, the government is focused on holding officials accountable while streamlining operations to align with national development goals.

Despite concerns regarding a budget deficit, Prasad defended the recent national budget, outlining its design to bolster economic resilience against global challenges. He pointed out notable achievements, including a reduction in the debt-to-GDP ratio from 90% to under 80%, reflecting a healthier fiscal landscape. He also flagged key infrastructure projects, notably the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project and upgrades to health and water systems, aimed at improving community well-being and supporting growth.

Prasad is optimistic for the business sector, urging companies to invest with confidence as the government implements reforms to create a more conducive environment for business expansion. The government’s proactive measures, underscoring fiscal responsibility and strategic investments, foster hope for a more vibrant economic future for Fiji.

The collaborative atmosphere, where community feedback plays a crucial role in shaping governmental policies, signals a positive trajectory for Fiji, allowing for a stronger, more inclusive economy poised to benefit all Fijians.
