Fiji will be represented at the inaugural Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children in Bogota, Colombia, this month. The delegation includes Lynda Tabuya, Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, alongside Ms. Natalie Siegel-Brown, the Ministry’s Child Advisor, and Ms. Arieta Tagivetaua, the Director of Children.
During this important event, Minister Tabuya aims to highlight Fiji’s commitment to combating violence against children. She will also promote the concept of care blogs, similar to those found in Colombia, which provide essential support spaces for caregivers and working-class individuals. Care blogs serve as safe havens where caregivers can take a respite from their daily challenges.
Tabuya notes the significance of introducing such programs in Fiji, particularly to bolster the mental health of both caregivers and families, including those caring for cancer patients. The care blogs concept encompasses spaces for childcare, elder care, and support for individuals with disabilities, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations have dedicated areas where they can receive care while enabling their caregivers to pursue educational or health-related activities.
The potential implementation of these transformative ideas back in Fiji stands to create a lasting positive impact by enhancing the support systems for children and families in need.
This initiative underscores a hopeful vision for a more supportive environment for children and their caregivers in Fiji, strengthening the community’s resilience and advocating for the rights of the most vulnerable.
