The Fijian government is intensifying efforts to enhance affordable housing availability as part of its broader commitment to address housing shortages. Following a recent increase in funding, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government has been allocated $52.6 million for the 2025-2026 National Budget, a substantial increase from $32.3 million in the previous year. Finance Minister Biman Prasad emphasized ongoing initiatives to make homes more accessible for low- and middle-income families, particularly by collaborating with Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) like Habitat for Humanity.
This year, the government is channeling $15 million into legalizing six informal settlements, which will provide about 1,500 families with proper housing leases and essential services. An additional allocation of $2.2 million will support the relocation of families facing eviction in areas like Nabua and Vatuwaqa. Moreover, the Public Rental Board (PRB) is extending rental subsidies for low-income families as part of its strategy to advance low-cost housing projects.
Tax incentives for land developers have also been extended to stimulate construction, alongside low-interest home loans remaining below 4%, which continue to be a pivotal driver for homebuyers. The government’s initiative includes a $4 million investment in partnerships with organizations focused on promoting affordable housing options.
Minister Prasad stated that these budget allocations represent a significant advancement in combating Fiji’s housing crisis, ensuring that families gain access to safe and secure homes.
