Fiji’s Baseball Family Trio Ready to Make Waves at Pacific Mini Games

As Murphy Sorovakatini prepares to make his third national appearance for Fiji in baseball at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games, this event will hold a special significance for him as he will be playing alongside his father Tavo and brother Marmoah. All hailing from Tubou village in Lakeba, Lau, the Sorovakatini trio adds a unique family dynamic to the competition.

This is not their first time sharing the field; the family has previously competed together at various national and international events, creating a blend of intense rivalry and camaraderie. “It’s quite competitive between the three of us, but with the whole gang here, it’s just fun,” Murphy remarked, reflecting on the positive atmosphere that their familial bond brings to the team.

Currently studying software engineering at the University of the South Pacific, Murphy has just wrapped up his first semester exams, balancing his academic responsibilities with a serious commitment to the sport. Team Fiji is slated to depart for the Mini Games in Palau on June 27 and 28.

The Sorovakatini family’s involvement in baseball has proven instrumental for Fijian baseball overall. Tavo, a former national team captain and vice president of the Fiji Baseball Association, has been a guiding force for both his sons. Their family story aligns with a broader narrative within Fijian baseball, where strong community support and dedicated coaching from figures like head coach Ken Tamaki aim to elevate the sport’s profile.

The current preparation phase for Team Fiji underscores a concerted effort not only to compete but also to inspire future generations. There exists a shared hope that their participation in the Mini Games will promote increased interest in baseball among the youth of Fiji.

As the Mini Games approach, the Sorovakatini family’s journey embodies resilience and familial pride that transcends mere competition. There is a palpable excitement and optimism surrounding Team Fiji, suggesting that their hard work and dedication may lead to noteworthy achievements at the upcoming event.
