Esther Tui Tikoicolo, a 23-year-old civil engineering graduate from Fiji National University, has overcome significant challenges in her journey to success, including gender bias in a traditionally male-dominated field. This month, not only did she earn her Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) with Honours (Upper Second Class), but she also received the prestigious Engineers Fiji Prize for Female Topper in Bachelor of Engineering.
Esther’s determination and resilience have been critical in navigating the sexism she encountered while pursuing her career. She firmly believes that difficult situations should not define a person’s journey, and she worked tirelessly to prove her capabilities as an aspiring engineer. “I didn’t let difficult situations define me,” she stated, attributing much of her success to the unwavering support from her parents.
Hailing from Juju, Rotuma, with maternal links to Tubou in Lakeba, Lau, Esther expressed her gratitude towards her family for their encouragement throughout her studies and internship. During her six-month attachment with the Ministry of Public Works, she was exposed to experiences she had never imagined, further fueling her passion for civil engineering.
“This is like a dream come true for me. Seeing my parents cheer me on – seeing their smiles, I know my hard work has finally paid off,” Esther remarked when reflecting on her achievement. As the eldest sibling, she is also passionate about inspiring her younger sister, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Environmental Science.
Esther’s graduation ceremony was made even more special by the presence of her grandmother, who raised her in Levuka. Celebrating this milestone, she emphasized her ambition to join the workforce and become a registered engineer in Fiji, hoping to pave the way for more women in the field.
Through her journey, Esther encourages other young women to dream big and to persevere despite setbacks, urging them to pursue their ambitions relentlessly. Her story is a testament to the potential for change and the impact of resilience in breaking down barriers within traditionally male-dominated industries.
