Fijian Youth Demand Healthier Food Choices Through Better Labeling

Young people in Fiji are advocating for more transparent and honest food labeling as part of efforts to promote healthier consumer choices. This call comes on the heels of the Consumer Council’s launch of the “Label Logic” report, which emphasizes the need for better understanding of food product contents among consumers, particularly young people.

At the report’s launch, youth participant Azaria Smith stressed the crucial role of reading labels, pointing out that neglecting to check them could result in health risks, especially for younger children. Another participant, Maki’uti Seruvatu, noted that many youths often opt for convenient foods like instant noodles, which, despite their appeal, pose health risks due to harmful additives.

Seema Shandil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council of Fiji, echoed these concerns, linking poor dietary habits with the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, in the nation. She highlighted the struggle many families face due to health-related costs and underscored the potential for better-informed choices through clearer labeling.

The ‘Label Logic’ report advocates for stronger food labeling regulations to provide consumers with the necessary information to make informed decisions and combat preventable diseases. This initiative is part of broader efforts within the country, encouraging consumer involvement in food safety discussions and empowering young advocates to drive change within their communities.

The emphasis on greater awareness and advocacy presents a hopeful outlook for public health in Fiji. By pressing for improved labeling and education around food choices, the youth and consumer advocacy organizations are working toward a healthier future for all Fijians, setting the stage for positive change in dietary habits across the nation.
