Eight players from Fijian Drua are set to participate in this year’s New Zealand National Provincial Championship (NPC) starting on July 31. Among them, speedy winger Taniela Rakuro and halfback Leone Nawai will be playing for the Taranaki Bulls. Rakuro recently made headlines by scoring five tries in Taranaki’s impressive 97-0 victory over Thames Valley.

Other Drua players joining the NPC include loosehead prop Emosi Tuqiri, hooker Zuriel Togiatama, and rookie Flying Fijians halfback Sam Wye, who will represent Counties Manukau Steelers. Loose forward Joe Tamani has signed with Otago, while veteran winger Manasa Mataele will play for Canterbury. Furthermore, Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula will take the field for Manawatu Turbos, and prop Haereiti Hetet returns to Bay of Plenty.

The players are expected to return to Fijian Drua in time for the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific competition next year, underscoring the ongoing development and integration of Fijian talent into international rugby circuits.

This showcase of Fijian players in New Zealand demonstrates the country’s growing impact on the sport, reflecting the potential for athletes to excel and further enhance the rugby landscape. Exciting performances are anticipated throughout the NPC, which could pave the way for more Fijian representation in future opportunities within the rugby community.
