Fiji has taken a significant step toward improving its approach to refugee protection by establishing a new Refugee Policy Task Force. This initiative was announced by Minister for Immigration, Viliame Naupoto, during the 2025 Refugee Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue held in Suva. The task force aims to develop the country’s first national refugee policy, bringing together government agencies, civil society organizations, international partners, and private sector stakeholders to shape a comprehensive framework for refugee protection.
Minister Naupoto emphasized that the establishment of this task force is pivotal for institutionalizing refugee protection in Fiji. He noted that the national refugee policy will not only strengthen protective measures but also ensure that the process of seeking asylum in Fiji is safe, efficient, and compassionate.
Supporting this initiative are newly signed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Refugee Status Determination, developed between Fiji’s Immigration Department and the UN Refugee Agency. These SOPs provide clear guidelines for assessing asylum claims, fostering transparency and certainty for individuals seeking protection in Fiji.
In previous talks, Minister Naupoto underscored the importance of viewing refugees as potential contributors to society rather than purely burdens. This perspective aligns with ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing Fiji’s immigration system and encouraging compassion and fairness towards those in need.
Furthermore, the task force’s formation is part of a broader strategy to address critical challenges related to human trafficking and irregular migration that Fiji faces. The collaborative effort among various sectors signifies a hopeful trajectory in addressing refugees’ needs and enhancing the overall immigration framework in Fiji.
By fostering dialogue and creating structured policies, Fiji aims to evolve into a supportive environment for asylum seekers and refugees, bolstering its leadership role in regional humanitarian efforts. This positive movement reflects a commitment to both national security and human rights, promoting a balanced approach to immigration in the Pacific region.
