The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways has announced that the sugar industry in Fiji is poised to receive significant support through the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF). This initiative is designed to enhance the resilience of the sector in the face of climate change challenges.

During a presentation before the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence regarding the agreement to establish the PRF, Permanent Secretary for Agriculture Andrew Tukana emphasized the potential benefits for the sugar industry. He articulated that the investment aims to mitigate disaster-related losses, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, and bolster the sugar sector’s role as a vital component of Fiji’s economy.

Tukana detailed specific areas where the funding will have a positive impact. Investments will focus on rehabilitation of drainage systems, construction of flood protection structures, implementation of climate-resilient cane production methods, and maintenance of rural access routes that are essential for transporting cane during adverse weather. These measures will play a crucial role in protecting rural incomes and ensuring the stability of production.

Additionally, Dr. Tukana noted that the support provided by the PRF will enhance ongoing efforts to safeguard farmers’ investments and fortify the agricultural landscape, which includes initiatives for small-scale farming, water catchment management, and improvements in agricultural infrastructure.

With Fiji experiencing an increase in the frequency of cyclones, droughts, and flooding, empowering grassroot sugarcane farmers is essential for ensuring food security, maintaining stable livelihoods, and achieving long-term sustainability in the industry. The proactive steps being taken signal a hopeful move towards strengthening the sector and securing its future amidst environmental challenges.
