The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is committed to enhancing player welfare by collaborating closely with the Fiji Rugby Players Association (FRPA). This partnership aims to address key issues related to player welfare, education, and career development, ensuring support from grassroots to elite national teams.
FRU Chief Executive Officer Koli Sewabu highlighted the importance of this collaboration, acknowledging past challenges concerning player welfare. He emphasized that working alongside the FRPA is crucial for strengthening the protection of players both locally and those playing internationally.
The initiative goes beyond immediate concerns; the FRU and FRPA are adopting a holistic approach to rugby development. This includes focusing on the accreditation of agents, establishing proper rugby academies, and providing training and education for provincial unions. The aim is to ensure that player welfare is prioritized at every level of the sport, starting from the grassroots.
Additionally, the FRU is in discussions with an insurance company to explore options for insurance structures that would protect younger players. These efforts underscore a commitment to a comprehensive strategy that encompasses several provincial unions, as well as junior rugby clubs and schools.
This collaborative movement signals a positive step forward for the future of rugby in Fiji, aiming to create a safer and more supportive environment for players throughout their careers.
