Laijipa Naulivou’s tenure as a board director of the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL) has come to an abrupt end, just four days after her appointment was announced. The FRFUL board confirmed her dismissal following her comments regarding lesbianism in the national women’s rugby teams, which she conveyed in an interview with SUNsports.

Despite expressing her belief in player rights and the possibility of managing differing opinions, Naulivou’s statements did not align with FRU’s commitment to inclusivity and non-discrimination. The union emphasized its dedication to the core values of World Rugby, which include discipline, respect, and solidarity. In light of Naulivou’s controversial remarks, the board deemed it essential to take decisive action to uphold the integrity of Fijian rugby.

In their official statement, the FRU board clarified that Naulivou’s views were personal and did not represent the union’s stance. They reassured the women’s team and other players that their opportunities and development would remain unaffected. The union reiterated its commitment to fostering a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment for all members, regardless of gender or identity.

The board has pledged to follow a thorough and transparent selection process for a new appointment and remains focused on promoting rugby development at all levels in Fiji.

Trustees chairman Peter Mazey remarked that the decision to terminate Naulivou was made solely by the board of directors, emphasizing that he was not previously aware of the developments. A joint press conference is expected to clarify the transition of powers shortly.

This situation highlights the ongoing conversation around inclusivity in sports and the importance of aligning organizational values with the principles they promote. The commitment from FRU to maintain an empowering atmosphere for all players is a positive step towards unity and understanding in the sport.
