Aseri Radrodro, the leader of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), has urged the Fijian Government to consider a temporary pause on high-risk deportations as the country seeks to enhance its law enforcement and rehabilitation systems. His call comes in the wake of an executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding potential mass deportations of illegal immigrants, which may impact over 300 Fijians identified by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation in the next six months.
Radrodro emphasized that while some Fijians in the U.S. have criminal records related to serious offenses such as drug trafficking and human trafficking, it is crucial for Fiji to adequately prepare its communities and institutions for the reintegration of returning individuals. He stated that precautions must be taken to prevent the introduction of criminal activities into Fiji’s already vulnerable security environment.
The SODELPA leader also highlighted the moral responsibility of the United States to assist Fiji in navigating this challenge, suggesting that the U.S. must recognize Fiji’s significant contributions as an ally and provide support for national security efforts. Radrodro advocated for comprehensive assessments and pre-deportation rehabilitation initiatives to ensure a thoughtful approach to the potential influx of returnees.
Moreover, he called for regional coordination through the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) to tackle deportation as a wider regional security issue and sought international support from the International Democrat Union, in which SODELPA participates, to advocate for Fiji on a global platform.
Radrodro’s remarks reflect a proactive stance on ensuring the safety and economic well-being of Fiji while urging the government to respond effectively to the challenges posed by potential deportations. Through collaboration and careful planning, there is hope that Fiji can navigate these complexities while maintaining its security and community integrity.
