Economic recovery, the rising cost of living, and inclusive growth were central themes emphasized by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu during the opening of the 2026 Parliament session yesterday. In his address to the Members of Parliament, the President acknowledged the ongoing challenges Fiji faces amid global uncertainties, while underscoring the need for economic progress to result in tangible improvements for households.

Ratu Naiqama pointed out that, despite the recent global shocks, Fiji remains committed to recovering from the economic impacts while addressing the escalating cost of living. He stressed that it is crucial for economic growth to translate into meaningful enhancements in the well-being of all citizens. The President referenced a household income and expenditure survey indicating that prior to the pandemic, 25% of the population lived below the poverty line, with many others skirting just above that threshold in both urban and rural areas.

These findings, he asserted, underscore the necessity for creating fair policies that are inclusive and firmly based on reliable data. The government’s agenda for 2026 and onward aims not just for economic expansion but also prioritizes decent job creation, protection for vulnerable groups, and investment in the capabilities of the population.

Ratu Naiqama highlighted three guiding principles that will shape future government plans: unity and diversity, ensuring every citizen shares in national progress regardless of their background; sustainability and resilience, which involves safeguarding the economy, environment, and livelihood of current and future generations; and integrity and good governance, aimed at reinforcing public trust in institutions and leadership.

These principles are expected to guide the formulation of legislation, budget decisions, institutional reforms, and public policy across various sectors, providing a strategic direction for national decision-making in the years to come. The commitment to such inclusive and sustainable growth holds promise for a more equitable future for all Fijians.
