The Fiji under-16 girls football team is gearing up for their final training camp this month as they aim to hone their skills in preparation for the upcoming OFC U16 Girls Championship 2025 in Samoa. Under the guidance of head coach Marika Rodu, the squad of 25 players will report to camp on June 29 at the Fiji Football Academy in Vatuwaqa.
Coach Rodu emphasized that the final camp will be crucial for building effective combinations among the players and ensuring they understand their respective roles within the team. “We have a focused four weeks to instill our style of play and develop our positional strengths,” he explained in an interview. The training will incorporate technical and skill sessions aimed at enhancing decision-making, which will be vital for their performance in Samoa.
The coaching approach merges technical organization with attention to both the mental and physical components of the game. Rodu highlighted the balance between training and academics, stating, “As most of the players are still students, we will manage their workload to prevent fatigue and maintain motivation.”
The overarching goal of the team is to qualify for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup next year. In preparation for this ambitious target, Rodu plans to foster a positive team culture during the camp, which he considers essential for their future journey in international tournaments.
The selected squad showcases a commitment to develop future talent in women’s football, reflecting a broader effort in Fiji’s sports programs that align with initiatives seen in earlier men’s training camps. Both initiatives share a vision of nurturing young talent, emphasizing discipline and teamwork, and paving the way for future successes.
The strong presence of young female athletes in the squad embodies hope for the blossoming future of women’s football in Fiji, with the anticipation surrounding their preparations resonating throughout the region as a testament to the investment in fostering female athletic talent. This dedication could potentially lead to significant achievements on the international stage, marking a new era for Fijian football.
