The Fiji Country Gender Assessment 2023 has highlighted ongoing challenges regarding women’s representation in leadership roles, revealing that only 21 percent of board members are women. This stark under-representation was emphasized by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, during the International Women’s Day celebration at the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
Kiran noted the crucial roles women have played in uplifting Fiji’s economy, from grassroots initiatives to leadership positions in businesses and financial institutions. Their ability to innovate and create opportunities is vital for economic progress.
In response to the gender disparities in leadership, the Fijian government is implementing several policies and programs aimed at enhancing women’s economic participation. Central to this effort is the National Gender Policy, which seeks to create a cohesive framework that promotes gender equality across various sectors. Empowering women in leadership is seen as essential for achieving sustained economic growth and fostering a more inclusive society.
These observations align with findings from a recent report by the Asian Development Bank’s Pacific Private Sector Initiative, which pointed out that men occupy approximately six out of every seven CEO positions in Fiji. Despite some progress, such as the increase of female directors from 20 percent in 2021 to a projected 25 percent in 2024, Fiji still ranks lowest in the Pacific for women’s leadership representation.
Addressing these gaps and barriers is vital for building a more equitable society in Fiji. The government’s dedication to advancing gender equality and boosting women’s roles in decision-making is promising, indicating a future where women’s contributions are fully acknowledged and celebrated.
