The agriculture sector in Fiji is poised to receive heightened national attention as the government aims to position it alongside the tourism industry in terms of significance. Minister for Finance, Esrom Immanuel, emphasized the sector’s vital role during challenging times, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic when tourism ground to a halt.

Immanuel highlighted that agriculture was essential in sustaining the economy and communities, prompting calls for increased investment and long-term support for the sector. “Farming is not only a livelihood, it is the foundation of food security, economic resilience, and export growth. My ministry stands ready to support you through targeted investments, improved market systems, and better infrastructure, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture,” he stated during the British American Tobacco (BAT) Grow Plus event held in Nadi.

BAT Fiji has also expressed its commitment to the agriculture sector by distributing one million seedlings to farmers for two consecutive years, reinforcing their dedication to fostering growth in the industry. General Manager James Goldring noted that the company has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture to develop a comprehensive growing manual, aimed at assisting farmers throughout various planting cycles. This manual not only aids in agricultural practices but also assists farmers in managing their income and expenditures, showcasing BAT Fiji’s dedication to extensive support for farmers beyond mere seedling distribution.

The government has welcomed these initiatives from BAT Fiji, recognizing that such support mechanisms are crucial in fortifying the agriculture sector and enhancing food security across the nation. This collaborative effort reflects a proactive approach to ensuring a sustainable future for agriculture in Fiji, promising growth and resilience for its farmers and communities.
