Fiji’s amateur boxing scene is experiencing a remarkable upswing thanks to national coach Cam Todd, who has been instrumental in fostering grassroots talent and enhancing competitiveness. Since joining the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association two years ago, Todd has made a significant impact in the sport, achieving notable milestones. One of the standout achievements under his guidance was Jone Davule’s triumph at the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, where Fiji claimed its first gold medal in two decades.
Todd’s passion for developing young athletes is palpable, as he oversees a dynamic group of boxers aged 14 to 17, alongside a senior elite team. His vision for the future of Fiji boxing is bright; he believes the athletes under his mentorship are ready to make significant strides in the Oceania region. “I’ve produced Olympic medalists and world champions, but I’m more excited about the young athletes I have in front of me now. They are poised to dominate amateur boxing throughout the Oceania region and beyond,” Todd mentioned.
Prepping for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Guam, Todd’s proactive approach is evident. This dedication to training is reflected in the impressive showing of Fiji’s junior youth team at the June 2024 Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti, where they earned five gold, five silver, and one bronze medal. This marked a significant improvement from the previous year, demonstrating the effectiveness of Todd’s coaching and the quality of training being provided.
Furthermore, Todd has been a strong advocate for increasing female participation in boxing, with the number of women in the sport rising dramatically from just two to around 15-20. This increase not only indicates a shift toward inclusivity but also highlights the broader impact of Todd’s initiatives.
As Fiji prepares for more international competitions in 2025, including potential participation in the USA Boxing International Open and the Australian Club Championships, the excitement within the boxing community is palpable. Local clubs are actively supporting upcoming fundraising efforts, reflecting a united commitment towards advancing Fiji’s boxing reputation on a global stage.
Overall, with Todd’s innovative coaching and dedication to nurturing talent, the future looks promising for Fiji’s boxing landscape. The focus on youth development combined with an inclusive approach fosters a hopeful narrative for a thriving boxing culture in the nation.
