The Fijian Drua celebrated their inaugural victory of the season, defeating the Hurricanes 25-20 in a thrilling encounter at Churchill Park, Lautoka. The match, marked by its physicality and high stakes, saw the visitors leading 17-13 at halftime.
The scoring kicked off with an early penalty by Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula for the Drua. The Hurricanes quickly retaliated with tries from Fehi Fineanganofo and Peter Lakai, the latter showcasing a powerful driving maul to cross the try line. However, Motikiai Murray answered back, pushing over for a try beneath the posts, leveling the score momentarily. A critical restart penalty allowed Jordie Barrett to set up Billy Proctor for a try out wide, restoring the Hurricanes’ lead, but a late Armstrong-Ravula penalty meant the Drua were only four points adrift at the break.
Entering the second half with determination, the Drua initially struggled to maintain pressure due to early mistakes. Barrett then increased the Hurricanes’ lead to 20-13 with a long-range penalty, capitalizing on a tackle infringement by Droasese.
The dynamics shifted dramatically when Tuidraki Samusamuvodre intercepted a loose pass, racing 30 meters unopposed to score a try, with Armstrong-Ravula’s conversion leveling the match at 20-all. The game then devolved into a tactical contest under challenging conditions, with both teams exchanging kicks and dealing with handling errors.
The decisive moment came in the 67th minute as the Drua capitalized on a turnover. Quick and precise passing freed Ravai, whose clever offload sent Etonia Waqa sprinting 20 meters down the left sideline to score. Although the conversion attempt failed, the Drua had taken a crucial 25-20 lead.
In the closing stages, the Hurricanes applied relentless pressure within Drua territory, but the home side’s defense remained resolute. A late scrum reset consumed valuable seconds, and despite one final turnover after the siren, the Hurricanes could not breach the Drua’s defense.
With the electrifying support of the Churchill Park crowd behind them, the Drua demonstrated remarkable resilience to overturn the halftime deficit and secure a memorable victory. Looking ahead, they will take a bye week before returning home to face the Brumbies in Ba in a fortnight, aiming to build on their newfound momentum.
