Diana’s Fashion Legacy: Auction of a Lifetime Unveils Iconic Treasures

From elegant dresses to unique accessories, the late Princess Diana’s iconic fashion will be auctioned this month in what is claimed to be the largest collection of her clothing to ever go under the hammer. The auction, titled “Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection,” is set to take place on June 26 at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, featuring over 100 items that celebrate her remarkable life and career.

Martin Nolan, the executive director and co-founder of Julien’s Auctions, highlighted the significance of this collection during a pre-sale exhibition in Ireland. He noted, “This is the largest Princess Diana auction because we have over 100 items from her amazing life and career… keeping in mind Diana herself sold over 70 of her dresses back in 1997 to raise money for her charity.”

Among the notable pieces is the 1988 silk floral dress by Bellville Sassoon, known as the “caring dress” because of its association with Diana’s hospital visits, estimated to fetch between $200,000 and $300,000. Other featured items include a cream silk embroidered evening gown designed by Catherine Walker for Diana’s 1986 Gulf tour and a yellow floral ensemble she wore for Royal Ascot in 1987, both with similar price estimates.

In addition, the auction will present a Dior handbag given to Diana by former French first lady Bernadette Chirac, a sketch of her 1981 wedding dress, and even a hat worn during her honeymoon. The auction will also include fashion items from other British royals, including the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother.

Nolan emphasized the evolving perception of such collectibles, stating that many now see these items as assets that could appreciate over time. Part of the proceeds from the auction will benefit Muscular Dystrophy UK, aligning with Diana’s legacy of charity work.

This auction not only celebrates Princess Diana’s beloved style but also brings attention to the enduring impact she had on fashion and philanthropy. The pre-sale exhibition will be open to the public until June 17, inviting fans and collectors alike to witness the pieces that reflect Diana’s profound influence on culture and humanitarian efforts.

This reflects a positive legacy where fashion can make a difference, as proceeds will support important charitable causes, extending Diana’s altruistic spirit beyond her lifetime.
