In Silana Village, located along the picturesque coastline of Tailevu, Marica Bole and her family thrive by utilizing the natural resources around them. With the sea serving as one of their primary sources of livelihood, Mrs. Bole emphasizes the importance of careful planning and discipline in managing her household.

Living with a family of four, Mrs. Bole schedules grocery shopping every two weeks, sticking to a strict budget of $180. While many families may struggle to make their money last, she finds that adhering to a well-structured plan has been pivotal in navigating rising costs. “I always make sure I have a list before I leave home,” she explains, highlighting the importance of not falling for unnecessary purchases.

Most of her shopping takes place at the local village shops, which provide a wide range of essentials, from tea and sugar to fresh produce and toiletries. “I prefer to buy from our village shops because they sell almost everything,” she shares, noting that this also supports local shopkeepers. Trips to supermarkets in Korovou are infrequent and reserved for when she travels, as shopping locally saves both time and transportation costs.

Despite the temptations of eye-catching items displayed in stores, Mrs. Bole stresses the necessity of discipline in maintaining a budget. “If your budget is $180, then you must not go over that amount,” she advises, underlining the importance of sticking to financial limits.

In addition to savvy grocery shopping, her family benefits from their own plantation, which produces a variety of crops, including root vegetables, chilies, bananas, and leafy greens. “Our plantation really helps us save money,” Mrs. Bole explains, as it reduces the need to buy vegetables from the market. The proximity to the ocean further enhances their diet, with the family and other villagers regularly catching fresh fish for their meals.

Mrs. Bole recognizes the dual benefits of homegrown produce and fresh fish, not only easing the financial burden but also ensuring nutritious meals for her family. “We are blessed to have land and sea,” she proclaims, recognizing how these resources simplify life and contribute to their well-being.

Her advice extends beyond budgeting; she encourages others to grow their own food as it can significantly reduce expenses. With her practical tips on grocery shopping and cultivating a household garden, Mrs. Bole exemplifies how resourcefulness and discipline can lead to a fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle.
