Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in Fiji, citing high levels of criminal activity coupled with limited funding and resources. During the inauguration of the new Denarau Police Post in Nadi, Mr. Tudravu emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts among authorities, communities, and the private sector to effectively mitigate crime.
“We are witnessing significant crime rates; however, financial constraints persist,” he explained, noting the government’s competing priorities for limited resources. He encouraged a collective approach, stating, “At least we can have a joint effort in our bid to curb crime here in Fiji.”
In a positive development, Mr. Tudravu praised Denarau Corporation Ltd for its role in funding the new police post, underscoring the value of public-private partnerships in enhancing policing capabilities. He asserted that such initiatives exemplify shared responsibility, rather than laying blame solely on law enforcement, describing the collaboration as a “win-win situation” that benefits both the community and the police force.
The establishment of a police presence in Denarau was in response to reports of crime and drug-related activities that could affect local businesses. The commissioner expressed optimism that the new post would serve as a deterrent against the area being used as a hub for criminal activities.
To further bolster security, a dedicated tourist police unit will operate out of the Denarau Police Post, offering around-the-clock service to both residents and visitors. This initiative not only aims to improve safety in the area but also reflects a commitment to fostering a secure environment for tourism and local businesses alike.
