The ongoing investigation into the death of boxer Ubayd Haider has hit a roadblock, primarily due to the inability to interview promoter Freddy Chand, who is currently in Australia. In response to this situation, Chand’s promoter license has been suspended until he returns to cooperate with the inquiry, as stated by Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports.

Minister Saukuru acknowledged the feedback received from the public regarding the incident and expressed gratitude for the improvements within the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF). He emphasized that the public’s insights are crucial in refining the protocols of the commission, especially following Haider’s tragic death after a fight in October. The incident has ignited discussions and actions aimed at enhancing safety protocols in the sport.

In a bid to capitalize on the evolving landscape of boxing in Fiji, Minister Saukuru proposed an initiative to revitalize regional boxing titles. This initiative would see Fiji organizing matches that include champions from neighboring Pacific Islands, such as Tonga and Samoa, potentially increasing interest and drawing larger crowds to the sport.

Despite the challenges arising from the inquiry into Haider’s death, the boxing scene in Fiji appears set for potential growth. Plans for more frequent events are on the horizon, coupled with a focus on improving safety measures. As stakeholders and boxing enthusiasts look forward to these developments, there is a shared hope that these changes will create a safer and more secure environment for athletes.

The proactive measures taken by the Boxing Commission demonstrate a strong commitment to transparency and a safe competitive atmosphere, highlighting this situation as not only a challenge but an opportunity to enhance the integrity of boxing in Fiji.
