The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has introduced the Pilot Tourism Micro and Small Enterprise Fund, an initiative designed to empower micro and small enterprises (MSMEs) within the tourism sector. This fund is bolstered by a $400,000 allocation in the national budget for 2024-2025.

The grant program aims to provide direct support to small businesses, including family-run guesthouses, local tour operators, and cultural activity providers, which are seen as vital components of Fiji’s tourism landscape. The ministry emphasizes that by improving access to financing, the program will enable businesses to enhance their offerings and meet the increasing demand for immersive cultural and community-based tourism experiences.

This initiative is part of the government’s larger strategy to ensure that tourism remains resilient, inclusive, and competitive on a global scale. It aligns with key national programs such as the Na Vualiku Tourism Development Program and the Farm to Fork Initiative, all of which aim to develop a strong support network for entrepreneurs and communities.

To apply for the grant, applicants must be Fijian citizens aged 18 or older, operate a registered majority locally-owned business, have been in operation for a minimum of two years, and demonstrate that the majority of their revenue comes from the tourism sector. Additionally, they are required to contribute one-third of the project cost.

A public-private oversight panel, consisting of representatives from government agencies and organizations like the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, Fiji Development Bank, and Business Assistance Fiji, will manage the program. Applications for this grant opened on December 4 and will remain accepted until February 28 of the following year.

This initiative not only supports local businesses but also enhances the overall resilience of Fiji’s tourism industry—a bright prospect for the nation’s economic future.

In summary, this fund represents a significant opportunity for small tourism enterprises in Fiji to thrive and contribute to the local economy while providing enriching experiences to visitors. The combination of government support and local entrepreneurship promises a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji’s tourism sector.
