More than 40 young athletes gathered at the Fiji FA Academy in Ba today for the Fiji Under-17 futsal trials, marking a significant step in preparations for the upcoming Olympic Youth Festival. The trials showcased a strong enthusiasm for the sport, with 30 boys and 10 girls participating. Among them was a remarkable female player who made the journey from Australia to compete, impressing coaches with her remarkable skill and commitment.
Assistant coach Raj Kumar expressed his satisfaction with the turnout and the quality of the players. “There is a lot of raw talent, especially among the girls, and it’s encouraging to see players coming from as far as Australia to be part of this programme,” he remarked, highlighting the growing interest in futsal among the youth.
Kumar also noted that the competition will ramp up at the main trials scheduled for February 20 in Suva, where the final squad for the Olympic Youth Festival will be determined. This event not only showcases the potential of young athletes but also promotes futsal as an emerging sport in Fiji. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed during the trials could lead to a brighter future for these young talents on the international stage.
