Ambika Mod has reasserted her stance regarding the inequitable treatment between herself and her One Day co-star Leo Woodall in the wake of the show’s success. Following the release of their hit Netflix series, fans noticed disparities in the acting opportunities they received. While Woodall secured a notable role in the biopic Tony, which focuses on Anthony Bourdain, Mod expressed concerns about the reality faced by women of color in the industry.

In a recent interview, Ambika emphasized, “We just don’t get treated the same at all,” a sentiment she elaborated on during her talk with The Times, asserting that her observations stem from industry norms. Mod shared that her experiences reflect a broader trend in Hollywood where women of color, particularly those without industry connections, must exert significantly more effort to gain recognition and opportunities.

Interestingly, the actress noted that she initially hesitated to take on the role of Emma Morley in One Day due to the weight of the character previously portrayed by white actress Anne Hathaway in the 2011 film adaptation. She expressed excitement about bringing a fresh perspective to the character, hoping that young women who rarely see themselves represented on screen would feel empowered.

Mod reflected on her journey, acknowledging that trying to break into the industry would have been much more challenging a decade ago due to the barriers that exist for actors of color. She championed the notion of modernizing narratives in film and television to embrace inclusivity.

The conversation around equity in the entertainment industry continues to evolve, and Mod’s statements contribute to an essential dialogue around representation and the systemic challenges faced by many artists. Her boldness in discussing these issues reflects a growing awareness within the industry, giving hope for a more equitable future for all artists. As the industry increasingly acknowledges and addresses gender and racial disparities, voices like Mod’s are vital in fostering a more inclusive environment that celebrates diverse talents.
