The Suva Magistrates Court has granted Daniel Whippy, Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, permission to travel abroad for medical treatment. Whippy is facing a charge of counseling for the omission of an offense relating to the alleged advice he provided to former National Fire Authority (NFA) Chair John O’Connor to alter findings from a fire investigation report dated April 30, 2018.
In court, Whippy’s attorney, Suruj Sharma, indicated that the travel is necessary for knee surgery planned from February 2 to March 1, 2025. The prosecutor from the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC), Lavenia Ravuikadavu, did not contest this request, allowing the court to lift the stop departure order on January 30, 2025, effective until March 2, 2025.
Magistrate Hamza approved the travel while requiring Whippy to post two surety bonds of $20,000 each and to deposit $50,000 with the court, ensuring accountability while accommodating Whippy’s urgent health needs. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 3, 2025, for the hearing of the case.
Also relevant to the case, John O’Connor has entered a plea of not guilty to similar charges filed by FICAC, raising significant discussions around accountability and integrity in corporate governance within Fiji.
As the legal proceedings develop, this case not only emphasizes the complexities individuals face in balancing health and legal responsibilities but also serves as a hopeful reminder of the judicial system’s ability to accommodate personal circumstances. It is a timely reflection on the rights of individuals involved in legal matters to seek necessary medical treatment while remaining compliant with the law.
