The Vulaga Cricket team from Lau has made a notable debut at the 2025 National Easter Cricket Tournament, held at Albert Park in Suva. This event drew participants from 15 teams, showcasing the growing interest in cricket across Fiji. Despite undergoing a challenging introduction, Vulaga displayed commendable determination and team spirit.
In their inaugural matches, the Vulaga team faced tough competitors, losing to both Cicia and the defending champions, Kabara. Head coach Jone Vusoniua expressed pride in his players’ performance, especially given that many were stepping into the sport for the first time. “The boys really prepared for this competition. Playing for the first time is something big for us; we are just grateful for the exposure,” Vusoniua remarked.
Preparation ahead of the tournament was rigorous, but the team acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly in their fielding. Vusoniua stated, “We have a few things to improve on, especially our fielding, so we will work on it before we face Lakeba and other matches we have.”
The Vulaga team’s participation underlines a broader commitment within Fiji to nurture cricket at the grassroots level, aligning with Cricket Fiji’s initiatives aimed at developing younger athletes. The tournament has also provided these new players with invaluable experience and exposure that will be essential for their growth.
Despite the challenges of limited resources, including training equipment, the team’s positive attitude and resilience are noteworthy. They have received supportive backing from Cricket Fiji as well as their families, fostering a hopeful environment for the future of cricket in their community.
As the tournament progresses toward its conclusion, there’s a collective anticipation for the Vulaga team’s continued growth and potential successes in future competitions, reflecting a promising future for cricket in Fiji.
