Fiji is set to enhance its efforts in combating maritime crime with a significant financial injection from the United States, totaling $500,000. This funding aims to address pressing issues such as illegal fishing and transnational crime in the Pacific waters. The announcement was made by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau during his recent visit to the island nation.

The allocated funds will be channelled through Congress and will specifically support the Republic of Fiji Navy. This financial boost is intended to provide the Navy with advanced communications technology, which is crucial for effective maritime security operations and disaster response efforts.

Landau emphasized the United States’ commitment to collaborating with Pacific partners in the fight against drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and other forms of transnational crime that pose risks to the region’s security and prosperity. He noted, “By supporting Fiji’s ability to protect its sovereignty and natural resources, we are advancing the vision of a free and open Pacific — a strategy that benefits not only Fiji but the entire region.”

The new communications technologies will enhance the coordination of US-donated Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats and facilitate ongoing improvements to the boat ramp at Stanley Brown Naval Base. With these upgrades, the Fijian Navy will have better tools to address the challenges of organized crime, drug trafficking, and illegal fishing, which threaten both maritime and national security.

As a key security collaborator in the Pacific, Fiji stands to gain significantly from these enhanced capabilities. The security assistance from the US not only fortifies Fiji’s efforts to tackle maritime threats but also underscores America’s commitment to maintaining strong ties and shared objectives with its Pacific partners, promoting a safer and more stable region.
