The growing prevalence of elder abuse, neglect, and suicide has alarmed the Ministry of Social Protection in Fiji. Minister Sashi Kiran, while addressing Parliament after President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s speech, underscored the urgent need for proactive measures to protect the rights of the elderly.
Kiran announced plans for a thorough review of the Council of Older Persons Act 2024. This review is expected to introduce vital intervention mechanisms aimed at safeguarding seniors’ rights. “Through the National Council of Older Persons, we are creating gathering spaces in each district. These spaces will serve as networking hubs where seniors can come together, access various services, and receive counseling when they visit urban areas for their allowances,” Kiran explained.
The minister highlighted how regular interaction and support could play a pivotal role in reducing incidents of abuse. By collaborating with district advisory councils and local leaders, the government aims to identify homebound seniors and facilitate outreach programs to check on their well-being.
In addition, Kiran called for collaboration with faith-based organizations to establish regular events and activities for seniors at local centers. This initiative is geared towards promoting emotional and mental well-being among the elderly population, reflecting ongoing concerns about their overall welfare.
This initiative aligns with previous discussions on the need for enhanced community support for seniors, echoing Kiran’s earlier calls to strengthen the support network for elderly individuals. The alarming rise in elder neglect and suicide, including reports of 19 suicides among seniors from January to August of the previous year, has undeniably brought urgency to these concerns.
A collaborative approach involving families, community members, and governmental support could lead to significant improvements in the quality of life for Fiji’s seniors. The ongoing efforts to protect this vulnerable segment of the population exemplify a hopeful commitment toward fostering a caring society that values and uplifts its older citizens.
