Seraphine Mock recently expressed her profound grief and anguish following the tragic death of her 35-year-old son, Richard Mock, whose body was discovered in Nasau, Nadi. The family was informed of his death only days after it occurred, leaving them in shock and seeking answers amidst allegations that police officers may have discarded his body after detaining him for property damage related to intoxication.
Richard was reported to have passed away on January 18, with the circumstances surrounding his death coming under scrutiny. His mother is pressing for clarity on how her son died while in police custody, stating they have yet to receive satisfactory responses from law enforcement. “We have been questioning the police about how he died while in their custody,” she said.
Richard was last seen in Wailoaloa, where he lost consciousness after drinking. Following this, he was taken into custody and subsequently transferred to the Namaka Police Station for overnight detention. Mrs. Mock is particularly interested in reviewing CCTV footage from the station to understand how her son ended up in Nasau. The emotional toll of having to identify Richard’s body has been unbearable, particularly given the ambiguous details about the circumstances of his death.
The Mock family held a funeral for Richard last Thursday, where he was cremated. Newly-appointed Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has confirmed that the case is under investigation. Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Mesake Waqa, stated a post-mortem examination has been conducted in accordance with standard investigative procedures, but findings won’t be disclosed while the investigation remains ongoing.
As the family waits for justice, they cling to the hope that Richard’s case will be thoroughly scrutinized, ensuring that no other mother has to face such heart-wrenching loss without answers. The community’s support for the Mock family highlights the widespread call for accountability in cases involving police conduct, as they stand united in seeking justice for Richard.
