The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is actively monitoring the potential for outbreaks of communicable diseases in light of recent heavy rainfall and flooding. Health permanent secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu highlighted the ministry’s ongoing vigilance regarding diseases such as leptospirosis, dengue fever, and typhoid, noting that the mixing of clean and contaminated water sources poses a heightened risk of transmission within communities.

As a proactive measure, the ministry is also keeping an eye on influenza and other respiratory illnesses, which typically see an uptick during this period. In the Western Division, over 200 dengue fever cases have already been documented.

To mitigate the risks, Commissioner Western, Apolosi Lewaqai, announced that local teams have been mobilized to conduct cleanup operations in identified hot spots, including Lautoka, Nadi, and Sigatoka. These efforts are crucial in preventing further spread of the diseases, and teams of district and provincial administrators are leading clean-up campaigns to address the situation effectively.

This vigilant approach by health authorities serves as a reminder of the importance of community cooperation in maintaining hygiene and preventing outbreaks during adverse weather conditions. The proactive initiatives being implemented offer a hopeful outlook toward controlling the spread of diseases during this challenging time.
