Preparation time is poised to become a critical factor in selecting the Fiji Water Flying Fijians squad for the upcoming Nations Championships, as outlined by head coach Mick Byrne. Notably, the team will convene just one week before the tournament begins, a significant challenge when considering the preparation time of their competitors.
Reflecting on the previous year’s experience against Australia, where his team only had three training sessions compared to Australia’s 30 days, Byrne emphasized the need for careful player selection. He stated, “Selection becomes paramount. We need to be able to trust the players we select. We must know that they will come in and do the work.”
An essential aspect of selection will be the players’ ability to align with the team’s playing style. Byrne highlighted the importance of choosing individuals who can embrace the team’s vision and commit fully. “They’ll buy into what we’re trying to do, and they’ll commit to what we’re doing,” he noted.
Byrne anticipates a higher standard of competition than the team has faced previously. He remarked on the current average of 38 minutes of ball-in-play time, which exceeds levels seen in some Super Rugby matches. This entails a demand not just for endurance but for players to maintain a high pace throughout the game. “One of the key things for us is to make sure that we continually grow in that area,” he said.
Acknowledging improvements in defensive strategies, Byrne stressed that the team must continue to adapt to the evolving offensive techniques employed by top rugby nations. He praised the progress in their defensive efforts, particularly in face play, and expressed a commitment to further enhancing that aspect of their game.
With a focus on readiness, team cohesion, and evolving strategies, the Flying Fijians aim to meet the challenges ahead with optimism and determination as they prepare for the Nations Championships.
