Single father Epeli Balawa, aged 50, was filled with overwhelming joy as he dropped to his knees upon hearing his daughter, Repeka Koroi, announced as the Year Eight dux award winner at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. This emotional moment was heightened by the news that Repeka had also received a sponsorship to further her education and sports career at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School.

Repeka, the second oldest in a family of four, recently achieved gold medals in the Under-14 girls’ 800 meters and 1500 meters finals at the Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games in Suva. Mr. Balawa, a yaqona farmer from Korovuli Village, revealed the challenges he has faced since his wife left four years ago, taking on the responsibility of raising their children.

“We have struggled, but Repeka has made me proud by following my footsteps. I was the dux at Bulavou District School in 1989,” he shared. Repeka scored 425 out of 500 on her annual exams and aspires to become a primary school teacher. She currently resides in the school hostel with her siblings, aged six, ten, and fifteen, and makes a point to return home every Friday to spend time with her father.

“I dedicate my achievement to my father. He is my only support,” Repeka expressed, noting the emotional toll it takes on her when she’s away at school, worried about her father’s well-being. She highlighted how Mr. Balawa wakes up each day at 4 a.m. to prepare breakfast and help his younger children get ready for school, underscoring the value of familial support amid their struggles.

Repeka also extended her gratitude to her teachers and coach, Iosefo Apisai, for their support and guidance in helping her secure two gold medals.

This heartwarming story illustrates the power of perseverance and the deep bond between a father and daughter. It serves as a reminder that, despite life’s challenges, love and dedication can lead to remarkable achievements.

In a world where stories of hardship are common, this narrative stands out as a testament to resilience and the importance of family support, inspiring hope for others facing similar circumstances.
