Suva teams showcased their dominance at the Fiji Men’s & Mixed Netball Association National Championships held over the weekend in Lautoka. Teams from Suva took home victories in all categories including under-19 men’s, U23 men’s, open grade men’s, and open mixed grade. The only exception was the mixed masters category, which was won by Nadi.
The championships incorporated the PlaySafe campaign, aimed at raising HIV awareness and providing free testing during the event, under the hashtag #PlaySafe FMMNA National. FMMNA president Myron Williams highlighted the scale of the competition, noting that around 30 teams with approximately 500 players and officials participated.
This year’s event illustrated the rising popularity of men’s and mixed netball across Fiji, with players coming from various regions including Tailevu, Nasinu, Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, and Savusavu. Williams remarked that the tournament featured five exciting categories: under-19 men’s, U23, open grade men’s, open mixed grade, and mixed masters for those aged 35 and over.
This achievement by Suva not only bolsters local pride but also encourages increased participation in sports, promoting health awareness and community engagement. The event paves the way for further development of netball in the region and highlights the importance of such sporting events in fostering unity and health awareness within the community.
In summary, the Fiji Men’s & Mixed Netball Association National Championships was a resounding success, demonstrating the strength of Suva teams and contributing to public health initiatives.
