Opposition member Hem Chand has raised concerns regarding the escalating issue of school dropouts, calling on the government to take serious action. In response to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro’s remarks about the 2024 Fiji Year Eight Examination results, Mr. Chand noted a troubling 34 percent rise in primary school dropouts during 2023, with 1,162 students leaving school before completing their education, compared to 755 in 2022.
He emphasized that this increase persists despite the free education initiative introduced by the previous Bainimarama administration in 2014. The dropout rate in 2023 marked the highest level in the past five years, which Mr. Chand described as shocking.
Additionally, he pointed out that previous government initiatives, such as the Free Education Grant and Transport Assistance, were effective in lowering dropout rates. Mr. Chand attributed current transportation challenges as a major factor contributing to students skipping classes. He further highlighted the need for the government to examine drug-related incidents in schools and the importance of teacher retention.
