The Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, emphasized the pressing support needed for women rugby players in Fiji as they prepare for the upcoming HSBC SVNS Series. During a recent event at the FMF Gymnasium, where the Fijiana 7s team presented its traditional i-tatau, Saukuru openly addressed the numerous challenges faced by women in the sport.

He acknowledged the historical struggles, including discouragement and ridicule, that many female players have encountered while pursuing their passion for rugby. “It is essential to acknowledge the challenges women rugby players in Fiji have faced historically,” Saukuru stated. He highlighted that some players have endured significant hardships in their quest to compete at the highest levels.

Saukuru encouraged the athletes to honor their predecessors who fought for a place in the sport and to use those struggles as motivation for achieving greater milestones. He concluded by reinforcing the importance of awareness and support for these women so they can thrive in the sports arena.

The Fijiana 7s team is set to depart for Dubai this Sunday, marking an important chapter in their journey.

This is a positive moment not just for the team, but for women in sports overall. By acknowledging these challenges, there is an opportunity to create a supportive environment that fosters growth, recognition, and success for female athletes. It reflects an encouraging trend towards gender equality in sports and highlights the resilience and determination of women in rugby.
