Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw and the newly appointed Fiji Police Force Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu have strengthened their alliance by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Suva. This agreement aims to improve cross-border operations and bolster law enforcement cooperation throughout the Pacific, marking an important step in their ongoing collaboration.

The MoU outlines several initiatives where the Australian Federal Police (AFP) will aid the Fiji Police Force (FPF) in various capacity-building projects. These initiatives will focus on enhancing information sharing, coordinating operations against transnational crime, and fostering professional development. A significant aspect of this agreement is the deployment of Strategic Advisers from the AFP, intended to bolster the FPF’s skills in intelligence collection and strategic operational planning.

A notable feature of the MoU is the creation of a Regional Centre of Excellence for operational field forensics in Fiji, which falls under the Pacific Policing Initiative. This center is designed to enhance the FPF’s forensic capabilities, providing specialized training in crucial areas such as recruit training, investigations, and forensic techniques. This development not only strengthens Fiji’s policing capabilities but also serves the wider Pacific community, promoting regional safety and security.

Commissioner Kershaw noted that the MoU represents the dawn of a new era in policing support between Fiji and Australia, highlighting over two decades of established cooperation between the AFP and Fijian authorities. He expressed pride in their shared commitment to maintaining safety and security across the Pacific region.

Commissioner Tudravu referred to the agreement as a “new dawn,” emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and collaboration in addressing shared security challenges. This partnership reflects the essence of the Pacific spirit of solesolevaki—working together to tackle the rising threats posed by transnational crime.

This cooperative commitment highlights a hopeful future for enhanced security in the Pacific, as Fiji advances its law enforcement capabilities, fostering a safer environment for both its citizens and the broader region.
