In a surprising turn of events early Friday morning, gunshots were fired outside the residence of Bollywood actress Disha Patani in Bareilly’s Civil Lines area. At approximately 4:30 AM, unknown individuals discharged firearms into the air, resulting in no injuries. Authorities suspect the incident may be linked to remarks made by Patani about Hindu spiritual leaders Premanand Maharaj and Aniruddhacharya Maharaj. A faction associated with Goldy Brar has purportedly claimed responsibility.
Anurag Arya, Senior Superintendent of Police in Bareilly, stated that law enforcement quickly responded, deploying both local police and a Special Operations Group team to the scene. “We have established at least five teams tasked with capturing the suspects, and a robust security presence is now stationed at Patani’s residence to protect her family,” Arya shared.
Following the incident, a social media message in Hindi circulated, allegedly from Virendra Charan and Mahendra Saran, claiming involvement in the act. The translated post warned of severe consequences should any further disrespect towards their religion and spiritual figures occur. Despite this ominous message, police are yet to authenticate its legitimacy as investigations continue.
The alleged motive links to criticisms Patani and her sister Khushboo previously voiced about spiritual leader Aniruddhacharya’s comments on women and live-in relationships. Authorities are now investigating any connection between these critiques and the shooting incident.
In comparison to similar threats and sacrilege incidents, this attack underscores a rising tension between free expression and religious sentiments in India. Previously, high-profile individuals within the Bollywood community have faced security threats, fueling concerns about the increasing risks public figures encounter due to personal and professional views.
Public figures and authorities must now grapple with safeguarding freedom of speech while maintaining respect for cultural and religious beliefs. The incident with Patani not only highlights potential risks faced by celebrities but also fuels a broader discussion on achieving a balance between personal expression and religious reverence in India.
