Sharma’s Stand: A Democratic Battle for Fiji’s Constitution

Opposition Member of Parliament Rinesh Sharma has made a robust stand against the government’s recent attempt to amend the 2013 Constitution of Fiji, successfully blocking the proposed bill in Parliament. Initially advocating for dialogue and debate, Sharma ultimately decided to oppose the bill, highlighting the importance of maintaining democratic values within Fiji’s political framework.

The government required 41 votes to pass the amendment but could only secure 40. Sharma expressed that his vote against the bill was driven by a dedication to preserving the Constitution’s foundational principles amid misleading narratives surrounding his intentions.

Although the government has the option to challenge the vote outcome through judicial means, Sharma emphasized his wish to remain actively engaged in safeguarding the Constitution’s integrity. He firmly opposed the government’s bypassing of a nationwide referendum, stating that significant amendments should accurately reflect the will of the Fijian people, whose sovereignty must be respected.

Sharma called on Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to foster an inclusive amendment process, encouraging citizen and stakeholder engagement to ensure understanding of the proposed changes. By advocating for a referendum, he underscored the democratic principle of giving citizens a voice in critical governance decisions.
