Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo has criticized the actions of suspended Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde, who is reportedly insisting that he will only attend tribunal hearings if his salary is reinstated. Justice Temo described this stance as “unfair,” emphasizing that Pryde, being a highly skilled lawyer, is capable of representing himself or could seek Legal Aid if necessary.

During his testimony, Justice Temo highlighted that Pryde has improperly paid himself more than $288,000 in overpaid superannuation since 2012, branding it as an act of theft that detrimentally affects taxpayers. He pointed out that Pryde had illegally authorized monthly payments of $1,000 to himself without the required approval from the Judicial Services Commission or other relevant authorities. Temo clarified that Pryde was responsible for the financial decisions within the DPP, as there was no documented approval for these payments.

The tribunal is currently investigating allegations of misbehavior against Pryde, with a recommendation for his removal being considered. Notably, it has been revealed that Pryde had been in conversation with political figure Sayed-Khaiyum during an active criminal investigation, raising further concerns regarding the integrity of his role.

The tribunal proceedings have been scheduled to resume tomorrow morning at 10 am.

This situation underscores the importance of accountability in public office and the need for ethical governance. As the tribunal continues its examination, there is hope that justice will prevail, reinforcing the rule of law and public trust in the judiciary.
