Engaging youth during the festive season is a significant focus for the organizers of the upcoming “Drugs and Violence Free Rugby 7s tournament” in Bua. Scheduled for December 20-21, this tournament presents an opportunity for young people to demonstrate their athletic skills and promotes a healthy, positive atmosphere in the community.
The event will take place at the Wairiki Village ground and will feature approximately 24 men’s teams, four women’s teams, and eight under-20 teams, alongside an additional 16 volleyball teams participating. The registration fee for men’s teams is set at $360, with the cup champions receiving a cash prize of $3,000 and the runners-up earning $1,500. Further financial awards will be given to the semi-finalist teams, along with winners in the plate and bowl categories.
For women’s teams, the registration is $150, with only four teams allowed to enter. The women’s cup winner will receive a prize of $400. Apolosi Vakaloloma, the tournament organizer, stressed the importance of fostering a drug- and violence-free environment and highlighted their commitment to supporting the youths in Bua.
In addition to the exciting matches, there will be food stalls at the venue, conveniently located near essential services such as the main road, a hospital, and reliable water and solar power access. The deadline for team registration is December 17.
This initiative not only aims to keep the youth engaged in sports but also serves to foster a sense of community and well-being during this festive period. By providing a platform for healthy competition, the tournament hopes to inspire positive interactions among young people and promote a safer, more vibrant community.
In summary, the “Drugs and Violence Free Rugby 7s tournament” represents a proactive step towards encouraging youth engagement and promoting community spirit through sports. The effort to create a safe and active environment during the festive season is commendable and shows a commitment to uplifting the youth in Bua.
