The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 534 incidences of yaqona plant thefts on Taveuni Island over the past four years, from October 2019 to October 2023. This alarming statistic was brought to light by Prime Minister and Police Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during a parliamentary session, where he addressed concerns raised by Group of Nine (G9) Leader Ioane Naivalurua regarding the rise in these thefts.
Mr. Rabuka noted the challenges in controlling these thefts, especially in light of spikes noted during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2019 to 2020, which saw theft cases increase significantly. The reported cases for each year are as follows: 71 cases in 2019, 115 in 2020, 111 in 2021, 98 in 2022, and 57 cases in 2023. However, there has been a worrying revival in thefts in the initial part of 2024, with 82 cases already recorded from January to October.
Despite the identified challenges, there are steps being taken to address the issue. Mr. Rabuka mentioned a collaborative initiative involving the police, the Methodist Church, and other community leaders to combat the ongoing thefts. Recognizing that no regulations currently exist for the sale and purchase of green yaqona plants, the Fiji Police Force is advocating that all yaqona business license holders should be mandated to include provisions for the handling of green yaqona as part of their licensing criteria.
This situation underscores the importance of community collaboration and regulatory frameworks in tackling agricultural theft. As efforts continue to establish better controls around yaqona sales and strengthen community ties, there is potential for positive change. By actively involving local organizations and the police, Fiji can foster a stronger united front against theft and support the local yaqona industry.
In summary, while the issue of yaqona theft on Taveuni Island reflects broader challenges, the ongoing discussions and initiatives among diverse stakeholders offer hope for a more secure future for this vital cultural resource.
