Ratu Aporosa Lalabalavu, a dedicated student from Marist Brothers High School, has accomplished a significant milestone in his rugby career by being selected for the SportsWorld Fiji under-20 team. He is set to participate in the eagerly anticipated Oceania U20 Rugby Championship. Hailing from Cuvu in Nadroga, Lalabalavu showcased his remarkable speed and athleticism at the Fiji Finals, where he earned gold medals in various events for his school.
Lalabalavu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country in rugby, describing this moment as a dream come true. “This is a great opportunity for me to show my talent for my country; it has been a tough ride for me, but I thank God for always protecting me through my journey,” he stated. His selection into the training squad marks a crucial step towards achieving his goals, and he is excited to demonstrate his skills on the national stage.
National U20 head coach Senirusi Seruvakula praised Lalabalavu’s talent, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young players who can eventually fill leadership roles in Fiji’s senior rugby team. “Abo (Lalabalavu) has skills we have been searching for and is displaying depth in the game,” said Seruvakula, highlighting the strategic intent behind including Lalabalavu and two other secondary school players in the development plan aimed at enhancing their rugby capabilities.
Lalabalavu recently participated in his first training session with the national side and is scheduled to travel with the MBHS U18 team to New Zealand. The Oceania U20 Rugby Championship is set to take place from May 26 to June 11 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, offering a vital platform for emerging rugby talents like Lalabalavu.
