Fiji’s sugar industry is currently facing significant challenges, with the country’s sugar mills operating at a loss due to low sugarcane supplies and underperformance. Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh explained that despite crushing 1.5 million tonnes of cane, production remains stagnant at around 150,000 tonnes. The sector, which contributes approximately $150 million in foreign exchange, is regarded as a key economic driver, especially during the pandemic when other industries faced closures.
Singh pointed out that the national average yield is just 47 tonnes per hectare, a figure well below the ideal of 75 tonnes. This decline in productivity is concerning as historical output saw mills crushing up to 4.2 million tonnes of cane. The minister reiterated that the sugar sector is often referred to as “the elephant in the room,” stressing the need for renewed attention and action to revitalize it.
These challenges are echoed in previous discussions regarding the sugar industry’s decline, where various reports highlighted the critical issues such as diminishing numbers of active farmers, environmental impacts, and the pressing need for modernization. The decline in sugarcane production has dipped significantly from previous highs, raising alarms about the sustainability of this vital sector.
However, amidst the adversity, there is a glimmer of hope. The government has been proactive, implementing initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and increasing productivity. There are discussions on transitioning payment structures to reward quality over quantity, which could incentivize better yield and quality standards.
